newborn photography essentials from amazon canada with links!

While I no longer offer posed newborn photography, I did for 10 years. If I had to start from scratch as a newbie I would have loved these recommendations and it would have saved me a ton of time, and money.

I will link my amazon store at the bottom so you can shop til ya drop! Or just click HERE if you hate reading ;)

  1. PLM defuser. Depending on your lighting setup, having multiple diffuser covers on my PLM change everything. I used a Paul C Buff lighting system and even with the power all the way down, I was getting harsh light creative blown out highlights. Adding an extra delusion allows for you to keep your aperture down and your skin tones looking creamy without the harshness of the light. You can buy these from their website and pay a crazy amount in shipping and conversation (if you're Canadian) OR you can buy off amazon! It's WAY cheaper and worked just as good!
  2. Fabric clamps. These ones worked the best because they are long and flat. I had purchased other ones from Home Depot but the clamps were small squares so it never held the fabric right. With these the clamp is longer so it holds more of the fabric. Its super helpful when you don't have to edit out the loose fabric in the background of every image!
  3. Soothers. These ones are 100% the best ones I have tried. They are the most similar to a natural nipple and it's actually the ones the hospital gives out after birth. I have had a ton of moms bring in other ones that their newborn wouldn't take. 9/10 times they would take these ones though! I used to keep a bunch of these in my gear trolly and then just gave them to parents if we used one.
  4. Lysol disinfectant spray. A MUST have. I used this on all my flokaties, couch, and props. Newborns have little to no immune systems so making sure your studio is as safe and clean space, should be your top priority!
  5. Lulla-Vibe. I wish I had this when my kids were babies. It's an absolute miracle worker! Throw some batteries in it and hide it under your prop pillows or blankets. It vibrates and soothes the newborns right to sleep. I couldn't do a newborn session without this. An absolute game changer!
  6. Wacom tablet. Ok if I'm being honest I hated this thing at first. I actually bought this then took it back, and then a few months later tried again. Am I ever glad I did! Once you get the hang of using a pen instead of a mouse or touchpad your editing time will be cut in half. I suggest hiding your mouse and give yourself a day or two to get used to it. Maybe practice using it during the slow season so you don't feel rushed to learn it. Once you do, you will thank me. You can even customize the buttons for quick zoom ins, flatten image etc. It's awesome!
  7. Dog bed. I know it sounds so ridiculous using a dog bed as a posing system but for high up shots it's SO nice. No more standing on step stools or raising your camera over your head to get the angle you need. It's nice and low to the ground, has a firm but soft base and you can even fit your rolling light stand legs under it, so your light angles are more versatile. Great if you travel too!
  8. Seagate portable external hard drive. This is for obvious reasons. Backing up the images from your session in multiple locations is so important. I have about 6 of these and they all work great and have never given me any issues.
  9. Baby susher. I saved the best for last. I even looked into wholesaling this product because parents kept asking me where to buy it, as it worked so good. It has different settings for how long it plays and volume. Mine lasted over 3 years without even having to change the batteries. Such a great product or even a gift for a new mom.

So there you have it. If you have any recommendations of your own or use these and loved them, I would love to hear from you!

Happy shopping, and shooting.
