Why BRIBES don't work when photographing kids

This can sometimes be a controversial opinion and if you don't agree, and bribes work for you, AMAZING! In my ten years of experience however, I have come to realize that bribes actually end up backfiring and here is why.

Negative Narrative

Instead of telling the kids to behave for the upcoming photoshoot, change the narrative to "we are meeting our friend to play in the field". This will change their perspective to be excited for a fun adventure ahead.

Focus on the fun

Negotiating treats before the session even begins, will set the tone that what they are about to experience will be negative or hard before we even start.

Robbing your authentic moments

This is the biggest downfall. Kids will shift their focus away from the moments and instead focus on when they get their next treat. Your session then becomes a negotiation instead of natural interactions.

What works betters?

Always have games and prompts in your mind. Keep the experience playful, low pressure and connection focus. Guide the session with fun activities. Think of yourself as at the "fun auntie/uncle" and just have FUN.
