PHOTOGRAPHING TEENS

Let's be honest. Teens are rarely excited to be photographed. They feel awkward and they have much better things to do, like hanging with friends, or anything BUT being at the shoot.

There are a few key things that I do in order to make the experience less uncomfortable and dare I even say.. kind of fun!?

YOU ARE NOT COOL

Trying to be cool is a fight we simply will not win. Embracing the lame and saying silly things, like calling them GQ models is a sure way to get a smile or laugh. Depending on the teen I'll throw in a sure file " so how many gf/bf you got at school? works like a charm for genuine smiles.

EMOTION IN MOTION

I suggest having them bring a prop that they are interested in. If they play sports, have them bring the ball, if they skateboard, have them bring that. Then have them play around with the item. It will place them in there element, gain confidence and allow them to relax for even just a few simple moments, allowing you to grab some shots of them naturally.

NOT THE POSE - THE PAUSE

What I mean by this is, be sure to capture the in between moments of the session. When they are just being themselves with thier siblings or parents. These end up being some of the best shots of the entire session.

TIME OUT

A time out is the perfect opportunity for teens to check their phones (because you know thats all they are thinking about) and allows you to put the spotlight on other members of the family. This is also a great opportunity to grab some shots of mom and dad. This will show that they are not alone in feeling like they are the centre of attention, and everyone feels a little uncomfortable being in front of the camera.

BE SILLY

Go the extra mile to do child like things they probably haven't experienced in awhile. Tickle your teen as if they were a toddler. It will make them laugh even if it's because the act is lame or get dad to piggy back them. A laugh is a laugh and I'll take it.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

I like to use prompts over poses, but if that is not your things, keep your poses VERY simple. Keeping it neutral is far better than keeping it uncomfortable.
